The upper house of India says the increase in Indian mobile phone use has caused an increase in public impoliteness, which is unacceptable and the most annoying criminals should be put in prison. House of Lords Member Rajya Sabha's influential agency letters and visits committee said the country's more than 277 million mobile phone users "are often in trouble." He added: "There needs to be education on where and how they use the device without annoying others." He agreed with the call for new tough laws to do just that.
These comments are in response to Gurjit Singh's petition. Gurjit Singh has called for a ban on the use of mobile phones in funerals and temples and the installation of wifi jammer in school buildings to prevent students from making calls. Singh also wants phone companies to use cell phones to disable devices on the street to prevent traffic accidents, and calls for a law allowing officials to use cell phones for private detention during office hours. These measures may seem extreme, but they have received strong support from the Times, the most read English-language newspaper in the country.
